A Little-Known Secret to Awaken Your Intuitive Powers
Intuition is often touted as a magical power. It's described as an inner guidance mechanism, a sixth sense, direct perception, and an instinctive, non-rational, inspired knowing, to name a few. From my perspective, intuition is a holistic type of knowing that involves sensing the unseen energetic background from which we select facts, objects, experiences, and events. To understand what that means, let's look at an energetic view of reality.
Ancient sources and quantum physics converge in defining reality in terms of energy. From this view, everything in our Universe is composed of energetic frequencies. This includes all material objects, our bodies, our thoughts and feelings, and the unseen field which is the Source of it all-sometimes called the Zero Point Energy Field. What we perceive with our five senses is "hard" material reality. Yet, if you are able to magnify matter down to its constituent energetic particles, it is found to be much less easily defined and measured. It is much more fluid, spacious, and subject to conscious awareness and influence.
How does this relate to intuition?
You could look at intuition as an energetic sense of perception. Viewed in this way, intuition is an ability to pick up on the energetic dimension of reality and translate that into a felt experience. Intuition takes the five senses into account, yet also adds an energetic sensing of the underlying field in which all frequencies interact-whether they are material, energetic, mental, or emotional frequencies. If this is accurate, it could explain how we can intuit what someone else is thinking or feeling or pick up on something that is happening beyond what we can perceive with our five senses.
My purpose in this brief article is not to argue for this description, but to give you a practice to hone your intuitive senses. The basis of intuitive knowing is being able to pick up on subtle sensations, feelings, or images. You can learn to cultivate your intuitive knowing by awakening your inner senses or your "inner body" awareness.
Inner body awareness is a felt sensation inside your skin. As you begin to sense energy inside your skin, you also become more able to pick up on subtle sensations in the field around you. In other words, cultivating sensitivity to what you can feel "inside" your body is a doorway to picking up on subtle energy sensations "outside" you. One way to develop this ability is energy meditation.
Energy meditation is a practice with roots in ancient Taoism, Buddhism, Hinduism, and other major world traditions. Qigong ("chee-gung") is one such practice from China. Qigong translates as "cultivating life energy" or "energy exercise." Qigong is a process of learning to feel, circulate, and store your life energy for health, longevity, and the awakening of spiritual and intuitive powers.
Here's a simple practice from Qigong to awaken your energetic senses. This practice is also a great way to release tension and stress and facilitate smooth internal energy flow, which is the foundation of good health. The practice is called "Shaking Your Body":
Stand with your feet parallel and about hip wide. Let your arms hang loosely at your sides. Begin to bounce slowly up and down on the balls of your feet by raising your heels up and down off the ground. Let your shoulders, elbows, wrists, and hips hang loosely, like a ragdoll. As you become comfortable with the balance and the motion, gradually increase the speed and height of your bounce until you can feel the vibration of your heels hitting the ground travelling up through your legs, torso, head, and arms. Feel the vibration through all your internal organs and all the muscles of your body. Let your whole body shake loose. Do this for 2-3 minutes.
Then, stop, close your eyes, and be as still as you can be. Feel your body as a whole from the inside. You may feel a sense of warmth, tingling, or fullness. Most likely you'll feel nicely relaxed. Allow that subtle feeling to expand throughout your whole body. Record the feeling of relaxation, energy, and inner awareness in every cell.
If you practice this daily, the inner feeling of it will become a relaxed baseline experience from which you can sense any changes that come into your subtle energy field. Sensing changes in your energy field is a doorway to intuitive knowing. If you practice stimulating your subtle energy and awakening your inner senses a little every day, you'll not only release tension and cultivate better health, but you'll also sensitize yourself to the energetic dimension in which you can discern the inner nudges and guidance of intuition.
