Why did these early mystery schools and their teachings need to establish secrecy in the first place, or in some cases conceal their existence entirely? A primary reason was because it was necessary to avoid persecution from others, whether it was the mainstream religion in that particular kingdom or its harsh government. So this form of secrecy dates back thousands of years, and the persecution of such schools would continue.

The early Catholic Church, especially via the Inquisition, accused many individuals of heresy for their radical uncatholic beliefs, and many early Gnostics were imprisoned or executed. Small wonder why such sects had to keep hidden and conceal what they truly believed in. And there were numerous pockets of these little heretical groups all across Europe and further east as well, most of which eventually did succeed at keeping their existence secret, although some were discovered by the Church.

Even today most mainstream churches or religions frown heavily on the so-called New Age groups, accusing them of worshiping Satan or instigating diabolical plots and so forth, all of which are fabricated to instill fear in naïve people. Many Christian churches, considering they believe their own Christ-centered dogma is the only truth, believe anything else is of the devil, whether it's New Age groups, esoteric schools, ancient traditions, and even all of the other mainstream religions. According to these elitist churches, all these people are going straight to hell. I personally think that kind of close-minded, erroneous thinking is pretty insidious, if not heretical in itself from the standpoint of the more universal wisdom teachings. Because it's just part of their sales pitch to scare people to join their church, to warn them about hell so that you can be saved from hell-fire, so their numbers will grow.

Another factor is that various esoteric tools are given to initiates, and oftentimes these tools require a certain degree of power and authority. In the wrong hands, these tools can cause serious problems, and can harm others. This is true in the Wicca tradition, or other magic traditions or pagan groups, because when you perform certain rituals, such as spell-casting, proclaiming incantations, or work with candles, charms, and magic potions, etc., one needs to be very careful what he is doing or there will be negative karmic repercussions. For instance, more malevolent individuals may use such tools of power for casting curses on people, or cause trouble in their lives, and I have known of such accounts. This is black magic, and you're messing with dark forces you really don't want to delve into.

However, some rituals may be safe, yet not deeply understood by most people, but only by the adept practitioners themselves. Especially regarding the mystical "priest-craft" in certain esoteric orders, where the priests perform their mystical rituals and sacraments of alchemy, which deal with transformational properties. For instance, the Eucharist is definitely alchemical, as the bread and wine is transmuted into the body and blood of Christ, on a mystical level. Fundamentalist churches believe this Communion ritual is practiced simply in remembrance of Jesus Christ only. Of course, the Catholic persuasion uses the term "transubstantiation" where the change is literal, rather than merely symbolic.

Although the debate continues between the churches, whether or not this is simply symbolic, figurative, or literal, the deeper understanding resides with the mystical practitioners who know better. In my own experience, the Christ-presence is within each individual, or should be, especially if one becomes enlightened, and so you must meditatively contact this inner presence. Therefore, your own being, the bread and wine of your own being is transformed and transmuted into the body and blood of Christ, so you are the one who is alchemically transformed as you partake, that is, transformed into a Christ-being. Perhaps it's better to say you have awakened and now have profoundly realized your true inner Self. In this case, the Christian Philosopher's Stone is the Christos within, or Christ-Self. Hence, the symbolic and literal aspects reside in this mystical form of Communion, or Coming into Union with Christ.
However, partaking of this kind of mystical Communion is only one method amidst many which can lead to such an awakening. There are various meditative practices that will help as well.

Regarding the Eucharist or any other example of alchemical transmutation, there are three schools of thought in alchemy we must consider: symbolic, literal, and the combination of both. The first school proclaims certain forms of alchemy are merely figurative and can be explained symbolically or allegorically. The second school says alchemy is strictly literal. And the third school declares that for alchemy to be real, it must have both elements of symbolic and literal transformation. According to the third form, the Eucharistic bread and wine is not only symbolic of the body and blood of Jesus Christ, but they are literally transmuted into the body and blood, which the partaker receives so that he may be transformed in the process, or even enter a mystical state where he may soon become enlightened, hence entering the mystical Body of Christ.

The guarding of certain alchemical secrets because of their power has been maintained since ancient times, given only to initiates and adepts, because others who were uninitiated might use them unwisely if they are not trained properly, or the wrong individuals could acquire such tools and use them for sinister purposes.

I must state here, just to be on the safe side, in case critical esoteric eyes are glaring at me, I haven't revealed anything here you can't find in spiritual volumes at bookstores or in online searches. I know, I've found a lot of so-called esoteric information online, and I own many books on such subjects. So nobody has the corner market on the Ancient Wisdom Teachings, or whatever they may perceive as "The Truth." And what that is can't really be found in books anyway, but within your own self.

Meditation is the key for discovering real Truth.
