Runes were originally used in a series of ancient alphabets dating back to approximately 150AD, which was originally used by the East Goths and then later adopted in other parts of Europe and Scandinavia. Although they were commonly used primarily as a form of communication for hundreds of years, they were eventually replaced by the Latin alphabet. Despite the fact that these characters were eventually replaced in everyday use, the use of runes has not completely disappeared. Runes are still associated with mythology or maybe used for decorative purposes, especially in Scandinavia countries.

As well as being used for practical linguistic purposes, runes have also been used for magic and divinatory purposes, with the tradition of rune-casting and rune-reading being almost as old as the language itself. Although readings initially became popular among Wiccans and neo-pagans, they have recently gained unprecedented popularity. Unsurprisingly, the word rune itself is derived from the Anglo-Saxon word meaning "secret" or "mystery", and they still carry a very mystical air about them.

Readings traditionally begin with the subject asking a question of the runes. The tiles are then placed into a closed bag and picked randomly by the subject, or cast down onto a flat surface at random before they are read. They can then be read individually or in conjunction with one another in what is known as a spread. It is possible to create different patterns or spreads depending on the questions that have been asked in the sitting. Some readers will have multiple sets of tiles, with each set being associated with a different type of question or theme, such as love or friendship. Tiles can be set in clay, stone, glass, resin or on polished pebbles. If pebbles are used, they will often have been personally collected from a place which has considerable mystical significance or has huge personal significance to the reader. These pebbles will then be marked or engraved during a mystic ritual, using a special stave. It is traditional to conclude the ritual by destroying the stave in order to prevent it from being used for any other purpose, as could result in the neutrality of the tiles being called into question. Although many books have been published to explain the phenomenon of rune reading, or to explain how to readrunes, it is not uncommon for each individual reader to have their own system.

Although it is traditional for the subject to be physically present at the reading, it is possible to have readings done via phone or over the internet in some cases. In these cases, the reading will take on a slightly different format, but the outcome of the reading should not be affected if the reader is a trained professional.
