Satanic Rituals and Magic
The summons of satanic energy may take many different forms and the Magus must tailor the session to what is required to produce the desired results. As in all things, there is no absolute formula and this is why it is important to keep a Grimoire of the sessions and the results. Just as a Chemist records the experiments in the laboratory, so should you during your practice. The powers of energy can be released by the practitioner and the desires of the session will be successful.
The release from within the chamber can be such that the effects can be felt for hours afterward by all attendees. The clearing of any stored energy before and after the ceremony is very important. Negative energy or the build up of too much residual energy, can be harmful for the Magus and other participants. There are many theories of clearing, grounding, shielding and protecting one's self from the byproduct of spent energy sessions. The mind and imagination are key elements when grounding and there are many practitioners who have molded their own methods from years of practice. Again, there is no absolute and practice makes perfect when it comes to any magical endeavors.
Purification of your mind through psychic hygiene is a good practice to adopt early in the practice of magic. To shortcut this step is to experience failures and perhaps the energy you harnessed, with return to you in a negative manner. The power of the full moon has often brought the images of covens to the minds of magic practitioners. The full moon ceremony is a prime example of the energy-rich environment the lunar power provides. The works of our magic is different because we can work our magic with equal power and energy without a full moon. The lunar cycles do not control the practice of our art and while a full moon does provide a better "vibe" for the Magus, it is not required.
The arrangement of the celestial bodies does not dictate the work for our magic either. The alignment of stars may be important for horoscopes and other occult workings but not for the workings of our ceremonial initiatives. The Goddess is represented as Mother Earth; the source of all things good and required for the very survival of our species. Without the blessed presence of the Goddess, the energy will not reach a level required for truly working potent magic and the spells as ancient as the earth itself. We recognize the power of certain precious stones and metals but unlike other arts, we do not need these items during the session. The belief of mystical powers of a rock or metal is appreciated by our practice, but is not believed to be mandatory for our works.
During a ceremony, there are tools that will be used to serve certain magical purposes. At first sight, these implements favor weapons such as daggers and knives. This may tend to scare those who are attending a ceremony for the first time. It should be assumed there would be those in attendance who will have a modicum of apprehension. Because of this, the Magus of the ceremony should take a moment to explain and reassure the new members before entering the sanctum. Remember, positive energy is the objective and fear brings negative emotions and negative energy.
Within the hierarchy of the group are the Magus (Celebrant), Illuminator (who holds the candle for the Celebrant to illuminate the Ritual Book), Deacon (or Sub deacon), Light of the East, Light of the South, Light of the North (who stand representing the cardinal directions of the compass), and the Congregation. The working of certain rites will require all of the assigned post holders but many ceremonies will only necessitate the Celebrant, Illuminate and Sub deacon. The use of candles is important to the ceremony and an adequate number of candles to ensure proper lighting are important. The candles should be the only light sources during the ceremony. Black candles are used most frequently but at least one white candle is required during each rite. Red candles may also be used with the black and whites candles but cannot take the place of either. Scented candles are not required and this is left to the discretion of the practitioners. Incense is important, usually a sandalwood, during an indoor ceremony. Sessions that are performed outdoors should also use incense.
The chamber should either be draped in black or in some way approximate the atmosphere of a medieval or gothic chapel. Emphasis should be placed on starkness and austerity, rather than finery and glitter. The chamber (or sanctum) is where the rite takes place. The work will begin and end inside the circle of the chamber. If the ceremony is performed outdoors, the work should be confined to a nucleus area around the altar. The congregation will join around the post holders during the work.
Blood has a symbolic power and as such, is used in some covens. This is where the false notion of killing babies or sacrificing animals was conceived. In truth, may religions use animal sacrifice as the cornerstone of their ceremonies. Animal sacrifice has been used extensively in other religions and belief systems. The victim's blood holds a power for some believers and the flesh for others, is a symbol to give to the gods in exchange for some type "favor" or blessing. The choicest and best of the stock is selected and placed upon the altar, the throat lacerated in some "holy" manner and the blood is thus collected from the tussling animal; its life drained into a font. It is the death throes that produce the energy that most religions feed upon and after the life is taken from the victim, the power remains within the blood for a short time. Some religions consume the blood, which is said to not only posses magical powers, but also contains healing agents and great fortune.
Other religions smear the blood on inanimate objects which are called "righteous" by the Order. The lifeless carcass is disposed of by fire and the ashes are sometimes used by elders to formulate concoctions and potions for use at later times. The Christian Bible and Jewish Torah are chocked full of detailed animal sacrifices of which are not only condoned by the masses but are "required" to satisfy their god. Even the Father Abraham embarked upon a murderous dictate from his god to perform a human sacrifice of his own son. In modern religious history, this person who attempted cold-blooded murder of his own flesh and blood is applauded as a biblical hero.... an antecedent to the modern rock star. There is much to be learned about religions that require such acts to satisfy their "gods".
Abraham Attempts Murder
During ceremonial magic workings, hooded black robes are worn by all participants except two: a woman dressed as a nun wearing the customary habit and wimple, and the woman who serves as the altar, who is always nude. The one conducting the mass is known as the Celebrant. Over his robe, he wears a necklace bearing the Sigil of Baphomet, the inverted pentagram. Though some versions of the Black Mass were performed in vestments consecrated by the Roman Catholic Church, records indicate that such garments were the exception rather than the rule. The authenticity of a consecrated host seems to have been far more important.
The woman who serves as the altar lies on the platform with her body at right angles to its length, her knees at its edge and widely parted. A pillow supports her head. Her arms are outstretched crosswise and each hand grasps a candle holder containing a black candle. When the Celebrant is at the altar, he stands between the altar's knees... her legs widely spread. A chalice containing wine or liquor (or whatever is desired) is placed between the altar's thighs. The Ritual Book is placed on a small stand or pillow so that is on the Celebrant's right when he faces the altar. The Illuminator stands at the side of the altar near the Ritual Book. Black candles, with one white candle, are used during the ceremony. Opposite him, on the other side of the altar, stands the thurifer with a thurible that holds ignited charcoal. Next to him stands a participant holding the boat of incense. Music should be liturgical in mood.
The success of magical operations is dependent upon application of principles learned rather than the amount of data collected. This rule must be stressed, for ignorance of this fact is the one most consistent cause of magical incompetence and the most likely to be considered as the reason for failure. Although the Black Mass is a ritual that has been performed countless times, the participants often were not Satanists, but would act solely on the idea that anything contradictory to the church must be good. During the Inquisition, anyone who doubted the sovereignty of God, Christ and the church was summarily considered a servant of Satan and suffered accordingly.
Darkness is often thought to be a powerful element in magic. It's cloak ascends to envelop the coven in a warm caress. For centuries it has been believed the coven prefers the dark in order to hide their lustful addictions and perverted actions but that is not so. The dark is neither preferred or required for some individuals of the left hand path. It is this individualism that separates Satanism from other religions that impose conformance. The Satanist is an individual wishing to express themselves as such.
Satanic rituals should be pleasing to the practitioner's senses. A ritual is more than the performance of a spell or curse; it is a rejuvenating experience that recharges the "Satanic Battery" of the coven. There are those Satanists that have never attended a ritual gathering, taken part in a Black Mass or enjoyed the festivities thereafter. For some, a simple altar in their home is all they desire and they practice their art in a solitary fashion. They are individuals and they know what works best for them. The blessing and purification of the ritual implements and vestiges is important for any practitioner of magic. In reality, energy can manifest in any form but the blessed will manifest a higher quality of results.
The four cardinal directions of the compass represent Fire, Air, Earth and Water. "To the East and to the West I beckon. To the North and to the South I show a sign proclaiming: Death to the weakling, wealth to the strong! From all directions the blessings of Hell manifest." There is often a distinction made between White Magic and Black Magic. The Satanic Bible does a good job of explaining this misconception.
